January is the first month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calenders and the first of seven months to have a length of 31 days. It was named after Janus, the Roman god of all beginnings. The first day of the month is known as New Year's Day. It is, on average, the coldest month of the year inside the vast majority of the Northern Hemisphere (where it is the second month of winter) and the hottest month of the year inside the majority of the Southern Hemisphere (where it is the second month of summer). In the Southern half of the globe, January is what might as well be called July in the Northern side of the equator and the other way around.
January is the way to the year and an opening to fresh starts. The month is traditionally thought of as being named after Janus, the divine force of beginnings and advances in Roman folklore, however as indicated by antiquated Roman agriculturists' chronicles Juno was the tutelary god of the month. January has the signs of the zodiac of Capricorn and Aquarius and January’s birthstone is Garnet which is commonly red and symbolizes peace, prosperity and good health.
